Wield School, c.1905
The children of Wield School photographed with Mrs Burgess, the Mistress, remembered by some of her pupils as a very strict disciplinarian, who administered the cane liberally, but was respected. The school thrived during her time (1905-1916). The Assistant Teacher (holding the baby in the photograph) was Julia Cosens
The children are neatly dressed – the girls with white pinafores, the boys with stiff collars. All the children wore leather boots and leg warmers. Several of the boys in this photograph fought in the First World War, including Charlie Jones, Arthur and Ted Prior, Percy Smith and Percy Gough, who was killed in action in 1918
