During September 1925, between 15,000 and 40,00 men of the Army and Royal Air Force assembled on Salisbury Plain for the largest field exercises since the 1st World War. This picture shows some of the troops belonging to 1st Ant-Aircraft Brigade of the Royal Artillery, relaxing on the grassy banks of the Avenue, as they pass through Alresford, during the manoeuvres. The vehicle on the right of the tree is a 3 ton Peerless TC anti-aircraft lorry carrying a 3 inch 20 cwt gun (pointing rearwards). The lorry’s steering wheel is at the right side of the picture. The gun on another of these vehicles can be seen in the background. The Peerless was the most widely used American chassis in the British Army in the First World War and the only lorry strong enough to be used for the 3 inch 20 cwt gun. Unlike many vehicles it was retained after the war.
