Edward 'Ted' Crockford (b.1902) in the back yard of his father's house in Pound Hill in c.1906. Ted’s father was William Crockford a coal merchant. Ted helped in his father’s business and died in middle age of a lung complaint brought on by inhaling coal dust. It was clearly appropriate to dress children in military uniforms and, of course, sailor suits for boys were then fashionable.
