Ropley 048

Ropley 048

A meeting of the Hampshire Hunt outside of The Shant Inn, Winchester Road (Soke Hill) between Ropley and Four Marks. Built around 1864, The Shant got it’s name from Shanty, as it was built as living quarters for workers (Navvies) building the Mid Hants Railway, which is a few hundred yards from the building.
The building would later undergo various business and name changes, including: The Watercress Inn, Nips Inn, an Indian restaurant [The Star] and also a kitchen fitting company, before being converted into a private residence.
