c mid 1950’s. A post war “Taylor” crane sold by Selwoods, probably a War Dept Morris chassis, but certainly Army surplus [C & F Freeman’s at Tichborne had one as well]. The front jib was raised and lowered by hydraulics and the crane had old shell cases in the back to provide ballast. You could change the lifting capacity by moving the wire cable to a shorter fixed position back along the jib. Here it is at the top of William Thorne Sawmill on Prospect Road with the End house of Mitford Road and the Meryon Road houses at the rear. There is a restored original of this type of crane in the Science Museum as a first example of a hydraulic crane.
