The house on the far right belonged to Mr Walter Spiers, fell monger (a dealer in hides or skins), who drove the mail to Winchester at 10 o’clock every night. His wife, Ellen, kept a boarding house and registry for servants

Mr Henry Eddolls, grocer and baker, occupied the next house

Behind the lamp post is “Cranley”, the home of Mr Harry Hall, miller

The white house, two doors further on, belonged to Mr James Sait, bootmaker
